A word about RCIA: RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a process by which adults “after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek the living God…..By God’s help they will be strengthened spiritually during their preparation and…..will receive the sacraments fruitfully”.
The RCIA program includes: people who were never baptized; those baptized in another faith; and those who were baptized Catholic but have never received the sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation. If you are interested in the Catholic faith, or have a friend or relative who may be interested in making this journey of faith, please invite the person to contact Sister Jane at the rectory.

If you are interested in becoming a Eucharistic minister or lector, please contact Sister Jane at:

FAMILY LITURGY
Every Sunday, the 10:00am Mass will have a focus on the family with the children in mind.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Next Sunday, September 25th at the 10am Mass, our Parish will celebrate Catechetical Sunday. Our theme for this Religious Education year will be “Do this in Memory of Me”. Those whom the community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful
opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the gospel.

The Religious Education Office needs your help!
Registration for Religious Education for the 2011-2012 school year is over. Classes begin next week and we still need a few teachers. Below is a list of grades for which we still need teachers. Help pass along your knowledge of our Catholic Religion to the students of St. John’s. It is only once a week for the weekly program and twice a month for the Sunday School Program. The program begins at the end of September and ends in April. Classes usually don’t exceed 12 students. Come for a visit to the Religious Ed. Office in the school building and take a look at what we have to offer. We are in the office Monday through Thursday from 8:00am until 3:00pm. Or you can reach us at 617 846-3100 with any questions you may have.

UPCOMING DATES
Sept 19 – Weekday Program – classes begin.
Sept. 25 – Sunday School – First Class – 10am Mass – The Religious Education Teachers will be commissioned. Class following.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Religious Ed. Teachers, Aids, Hall Monitors, Scout Leaders, CYO coaches, Retreat Team, etc – anyone who volunteers to work with the children in our parish:
The Archdiocese of Boston mandates that any adult who has contact with children through St. John’s must complete a yearly CORI form. If you are thinking of volunteering at some point during the school year you can either stop by the Religious Education office or give us a call to have a form mailed to you.
Also mandated by the Archdiocese, anyone working with the children must take a VIRTUS training class. You must take this class one time. The program confronts child sexual abuse through its Protecting Gods Children Programs. Most organizations that work with children have a child safety program in place. The VIRTUS program
maximizes those efforts by helping churches and religious organizations renew their role as safe havens for children and empowering them with the tools to help adults protect children. The class will be held here at St. John’s in Room 7 of the school building on the following dates: Monday, October 3 at 6:30pm or Saturday October 15 at 9am. The class lasts approximately 2 1/12 hours. The information you will be hearing is NOT for children to see or hear. If you need to attend, please call the religious education office at 617 846-3100, to register for one of the classes.

THE NEW ROMAN MISSAL
On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27th, the Church in the United States will begin using a new edition of The Roman Missal. This edition or new translation pertains to the book we previously called The Sacramentry. Familiar prayers such as the Gloria and Creed will have some new words and phrases. This new translation will not affect the scripture readings, the Prayer of the Faithful, or your favorite hymns. The new translation will affect the words we speak or sing at every Mass and the prayers that the priest recites alone. Over the next three months we will have in the bulletin the changes and the reasons behind them. In November we will offer some informational meetings to further help you become familiar with the new wording before the First Sunday of Advent. None of the changes will, in any way, change the meaning of the Mass. Keep an eye on the bulletin for more updates. Karen Flaherty

TWENTY FIFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: Isaiah 55:6-9
The prophetic words in today’s reading were spoken during the Israelites’ exile in Babylon. Earlier, the prophet had proclaimed that God was looking mercifully upon them and would soon free them. In today’s reading, the prophet points out that they now have a window of opportunity and should take advantage of God’s willingness to forgive.
Second Reading: Philippians 1:20-24, 27
For the next four weeks, our second reading will be taken from Paul’s letter to the Philippians. When Paul wrote this letter, he was in prison for preaching the Gospel and he faced the possibility of execution. A person in those circumstances tends to think long thoughts about death and death is what Paul is wrestling with in today’s passage.
SEPTEMBER 18, 2011

owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with
the first.'” -Mt 20:1,8
