PRAY FOR WORLD PEACE – PRAY THE ROSARY

In order to ensure a happy Christmas for all, St. John’s will once again host the Giving Tree.  Placed on the tree will be a number of paper ornaments on which will be written a specific item that has been requested.  Each ornament is prepared in duplicate and tied together before being placed on the tree.  If you would like to help, we ask that before or after Mass, you choose an item that you would like to donate and remove the two corresponding attached ornaments from the tree.  One paper ornament you will take with you to place on the outside of your package.  This will enable us to know the contents of the gifts when they are returned, wrapped or in a gift bag, to the Church and will help us in getting the gift to the correct family.  We ask that on the second ornament you print your name and address and place it in the basket next to the tree.
If you or someone you know has a need to be a recipient of the “Giving Tree”, please contact the Religious Education office at 617 846-3100 or the rectory at 617 846-7400.  We will, of course, respect the privacy of all families; therefore all gifts will be given anonymously.  The tree will be in place by November 23rd.
Please bring the gift, wrapped and labeled with the ornament, back to the tree by Sunday, December 18th as we need a few days to get the gifts ready for pickup by the recipients on December 22nd.  If you have any questions, please call the Religious Education office.

All donations must be turned into Shirley Guthro at the Religious Education Office in the school building by Thursday, December 8th.  Please make check out to St. John’s and label as “Holiday Food Donation”.

THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading:  Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31
The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings, compiled over a number of centuries.  Today’s passage is part of a lengthy poem which praises the virtues of a good wife and mother.
Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6
Paul and the early Christians expected the immediate Second Coming of Christ.  Today, as he concludes his first letter to the Thessalonians, Paul reminds them to be prepared for this.  His message is encouraging, not frightening.
Question of the week – Using your gifts
Adult:  What gift have you not developed as you had hoped?  What could you still do?
Child:  What gift has god given you?  What do you want to do with it?

A word about RCIA:  RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a process by which adults “after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek the living God…..By God’s help they will be strengthened spiritually during their preparation and…..will receive the sacraments fruitfully”.  The RCIA program includes: people who were never baptized; those baptized in another faith; and those who were baptized Catholic but have never received the sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation.
If you are interested in the Catholic Faith, or have a friend or relative who may be interested in making this journey of faith, please invite the person to contact Sister Jane at the rectory.

LIFE LINE SCREENING

The 6 for Life Health assessment measures your risk of developing 6 chronic diseases, including heart disease, congestive heart failure, stroke, diabetes, COPD and lung cancer.  A customized report will determine which risk factors contribute most to your disease risk and are within your control to change.  Finger-stick blood tests along with biometric measurements are included with this assessment.  St. John the Evangelist Church will be hosting a Life Line Screening preventive health event on Friday, December 9, 2011.  To schedule your appointment, call 1-888-653-6441 or visit:  www.lifelinescreening.com/community-partners.

Winthrop Catholic Woman’s Club

Spirit Shawls

Our Spirit Shawl Program began in Autumn, 2007.  Since then, more than 40 shawls and lap robes had been delivered to patients in hospice, rehab or nursing homes, to frail elders and others.  A label that reads “Custom Made with Love by Winthrop Catholic Women” is affixed to each item.  If you know someone whose shoulders and spirits would be warmed with a shawl, do let us know.  Our gratitude goes to the knitters, crocheters, sewers and donors of yarn or fabric.  For more information you may contact Patricia Tacelli, 617 504-0606 pattac5@yahoo.com or Mary Page, 617 846-5648.

As you know, the church is getting ready for the New Roman Missal which we will begin to use the First Sunday in Advent, November 27th.  Over the last few weeks there have been some articles in the bulletin which I hope have been helpful to you in regard to the new wording of some of our Mass prayers and responses.
Dr. Maria Cardullo will be presenting these changes in a more in-depth way.  Dr. Cardullo has put together a wonderful and easy to understand presentation for the New Roman Missal and will be hosting two informational meetings.  You may choose the one session that is most convenient for you.  The first session will be held on Wednesday morning, November 16th at 10:00am.  The second will be on Thursday evening, November 17th at 7:00pm.  Both sessions will be held in the Chapel.
I encourage all those who are interested in hearing about the history and reasons behind our new translations of some of the Mass prayers to attend one of these meetings.  If you have any questions, please call me at 617 846-3100.                                                   Karen Flaherty

Every human person – no matter how vulnerable or helpless, no matter how young or how old, no matter how healthy, handicapped or sick, no matter how useful or productive for society – is a being of inestimable worth created in the image and likeness of God.  This is the dignity of America, the reason she exists, the condition for her survival – yes, the ultimate test of her greatness:  to respect every human person, especially the weakest and most defenseless ones, those as yet unborn.
Pope John Paul

Catholics Can Always Come Home
Do you know a Catholic who for one reason or another has not been actively practicing his/her faith?  Have you felt something missing in your life?  Have you been thinking you might return to full and active participation in the church some day?  If your answer is yes, this may be the time and opportunity to invite non-active Catholics or yourself to return to your church and to your faith.  The church misses you!  Won’t you consider joining us in our faith journey by renewing your faith and understanding of the church?  Please call the parish at 617 846-7400 for more information.
