The Religious Education Office needs your help!
Below is a list of grades for which we still need teachers in September.  Help pass along your knowledge of our Catholic Religion to the students of St. John’s.  It is only once a week for the weekly program and twice a month for the Sunday School Program.  The program begins at the end of September and ends in April.  Classes usually don’t exceed 12 students.  Come for a visit to the Religious Ed. Office in the school building and take a look at what we have to offer.  We are in the office Monday through Thursday from 8:00am until 3:00pm.  Or you can reach us at 617 846-3100 with any questions you may have.

A word about RCIA:  RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a process by which adults “after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek the living God…..By God’s help they will be strengthened spiritually during their preparation and…..will receive the sacraments fruitfully”.
The RCIA program includes: people who were never baptized; those baptized in another faith; and those who were baptized Catholic but have never received the sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation.
If you are interested in the Catholic faith, or have a friend or relative who may be interested in making this journey of faith, please invite the person to contact Sister Jane at the rectory.

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First reading: 1 Kings 19:11-13
The prophet Elijah lived about 800 years before Christ. Because he was loyal to God, he fell into disfavor with King Ahab and Queen Jezebel.  He had to flee for his life to Mount Horeb (also known as Mount Sinai).  As you listen to today’s passage, it will be helpful to know that wind, earthquake and fire were traditional Old Testament expressions of God’s presence.
Second Reading:  Romans 9:1-5
In chapters 9 to 11 of Paul’s letter to the Romans, he addresses the painful question of why the majority of Jewish people failed to accept Christ.  These were Paul’s own people and he was personally hurt by this.  He still loved his Jewish heritage and in today’s passage he lists seven wonderful blessings that God’s Old Testament people have received.  He then adds an eighth:  Christ the Messiah.
But when he saw how (strong) the wind was he became  frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
-Mt 14:30-31
