TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading:  Isaiah 66:18-21

When the Jews returned from exile in Babylon, they found their beloved Jerusalem in shambles.  In today’s passage, the prophet looks ahead to better days when people from foreign lands will flock to Jerusalem as the city God built.

Second Reading:  Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13

The letter to the Hebrews was written to people who had become discouraged and were losing faith.  Today the author quotes a text from the Old Testament book of Proverbs and finds in it encouraging words.

Gospel:  Luke 13:22-30 (the narrow door)

Adult:  What daily choices are you making that will allow you to be recognized at the doorway of the reign of God?

Child:  What good habits are you practicing in order to be a good Christian?

Thank you to all the parishioners for your generous donations, as our Youth Ministry Car Wash was a huge success!  We raised over $450 and we couldn’t have done it without all of you.  All proceeds from this event will benefit our growing Youth Ministry Program.  God Bless,

                     Michael Miccichi

WHAT IS A CATECHIST?

The original meaning of the word Catechist is “teacher” or one who “echoes” God’s word.  But a catechist is more than just a teacher who has factual knowledge of the Catholic tradition and teachings.  A catechist is a “minister” of the church, one who is commissioned by the community to help pass on the faith to the children of the parish.  A catechist is also a “proclaimer” of the Good News of Christ, which assumes that he/she truly believes in Christ and therefore teaches with joy and enthusiasm.  A catechist is a “mentor”, showing the children by his/her own example how to live as a Christian, both in celebrating the sacraments and in how to live as a Christian in the midst of often conflicting social values.            ~Based on a piece by Carl J. Pfeifer,

The Catechist’s Connection.

Our summer months are coming to an end and I want to thank all of you who have come forward to teach our young people.  The response has been wonderful.  Wonderful too, is the large number of children who are coming to St. John’s to learn more about Jesus and His love for them.  Because of these large numbers we are still in need of catechists.  Perhaps you’ve never taught before and are a little hesitant to step forward.  Perhaps you are not sure you “know enough”.  Not to worry, we will help you and you will have a user-friendly textbook with many hints, suggestions and all the answers!  No prior experience is necessary.  None of our catechists have advanced degrees in teaching Religious Education.  They are mothers, fathers, grandparents and parishioners like yourselves.  To help you feel more comfortable in this role, we will be offering on-going teacher training.

If you have an interest or are curious, maybe the Holy Spirit is giving you a little “nudge”.  Please pray over this invitation.  We need your help.  We need you to share your time and your faith experiences.  We are still in need of catechists for all grades 1 to 9.

Thank you for your continued support of our young people.

To volunteer, please call the Religious Ed. Office at 617 846-3100.  The days and times of the classes are:

Jesus passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” He answered them, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate.” — Lk 13:22-24a
